Daya blog cover. Chipper Cash alternatives in Nigeria.

Chipper Cash charges 0.75% on every dollar that lands, with no cap, plus $1.50 a month to keep the account. The strongest alternatives for receiving dollars from abroad are Grey, Daya Borders and Cleva. Daya Borders takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros with no cap, Cleva caps its 0.8% at $5, and Grey caps its 0.8% at $10.

If what you actually want is a virtual dollar card to pay for Netflix, AWS or ad spend, that's a different product with a different shortlist. It has its own section further down.

This is one of several ways to get money from clients abroad into your hands in Nigeria. The full picture is in our guide to getting paid by international clients in Nigeria.

What does Chipper Cash do in Nigeria, and what does it charge?

Chipper Cash is a pan-African money app covering 21 or more countries. In Nigeria it runs four things a reader might be looking to replace: transfers to bank and mobile money accounts across Africa, a USD virtual Visa card, a USD virtual account with US account details for receiving international payments, and Chipper Stocks for fractional US shares. The USD virtual account is the part that competes with a Nigerian dollar account, and it's the part with published fees.

Here's what Chipper Cash publishes in its own USD virtual account FAQs, checked on 30 September 2026.

  • 0.75% of every ACH payment received, with no cap
  • 0.75% on an International ACH Transaction, which is how payments from platforms like PayPal, Apple and Amazon arrive
  • $25 flat on a wire deposit
  • $1.50 a month to keep the account open
  • ₦5,000 to open it, charged once and not refundable
  • ACH and IAT payments take 1 to 3 business days, and a wire lands within 24 hours

The account is open to verified Nigerian and Ghanaian customers only, and Chipper Cash applies a three-day review period to deposits.

Why do Nigerians look for a Chipper Cash alternative?

The 0.75% is the usual reason, and not for the reason people expect. Chipper Cash's rate is lower than Grey's 0.8% and Cleva's 0.8%, so on paper it looks like the cheaper account. On most payments it isn't, because Grey and Cleva both cap what they charge and Chipper Cash caps nothing.

What it means for you: on a $500 payment Chipper Cash takes $3.75 and Grey takes $4, so Chipper Cash is cheaper. Above roughly $667, Cleva's $5 cap makes Cleva cheaper. Above roughly $1,333, Grey's $10 cap does the same. On a $5,000 payment Chipper Cash takes $37.50, Grey takes $10 and Cleva takes $5.

The second reason is narrower, and it catches people out. Chipper Cash's USD virtual account won't accept a transfer from a Nigerian domiciliary account. Its own FAQ says the account “is not intended for receiving transfers from Nigerian USD domiciliary accounts”. So if the plan was to move dollars you already hold in a Nigerian bank into Chipper Cash, that route doesn't exist.

The third reason is the card, and it's what most people searching this actually mean. That has its own section below, because a card and a dollar account are different products and mixing them is how people end up with the wrong app.

What are the best Chipper Cash alternatives for receiving dollars from abroad?

Grey, Daya Borders and Cleva are the three that publish a full fee schedule and give you US account details a client can pay into. Daya Borders takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros with no cap. Cleva charges 0.8% capped at $5, and nothing at all on Upwork deposits. Grey charges 0.8% capped at $10.

Payoneer deserves a mention because so many Nigerian freelancers already have it, and it's priced on the way out rather than the way in. Payoneer charges up to 3% when you withdraw to a bank account in a different currency, which is exactly what turning a dollar balance into naira is. A same-currency withdrawal is $1.50, and there's a $29.95 annual account fee that Payoneer waives if you use the account.

Wire deposits are priced separately: Chipper Cash charges $25 flat, Grey charges $20 and Cleva charges $10. Grey also charges ₦35 on each naira payout and 1% capped at $6 to convert dollars into naira. Grey sets all of that out on its fees and charges page, Cleva on its pricing page, and Daya Borders states its 0% on incoming dollars and euros on its own product page.

As of 30 September 2026, $1,000 converted to naira pays Daya Borders ₦1,365,260, Vban ₦1,360,000, Cleva ₦1,357,000, Grey ₦1,353,010, Eversend ₦1,351,000 and Chipper Cash ₦1,304,000, at each provider's quoted rate before its fees.

The comparison above is live, so it shows where Daya Borders sits against the other dollar accounts today rather than on the day this was written. The fee is only half of what you keep. The other half is the rate you convert at, so it's worth reading the naira figure each app quotes you before you move a large payment.

Where does Daya Borders fit?

Daya Borders is a US dollar and euro account for people in Nigeria receiving money from clients and platforms abroad. It takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros, with no cap and no conditions, and there are no fees on it at all today. You get US dollar and euro account details, and the euro account is a real euro bank account rather than a dollar account with a euro label on it.

Daya Borders names Upwork, Deel and Payoneer on its own product page as platforms you can add it to as a withdrawal account. From the balance you can send to a Nigerian bank account, an international bank account, a USDT or USDC wallet, or another Daya user. You can also hold the dollars and convert when you choose rather than on the day they arrive.

Where Daya Borders isn't the answer: Chipper Cash does a job it doesn't, which is sending money to bank and mobile money accounts across the rest of Africa, and Daya Borders has no virtual card yet. On the narrower job of receiving dollars from a client abroad and holding them, Daya Borders charges the least of the four in the table at every payment size, because 0% with no cap doesn't move.

What are the best Chipper Cash alternatives for a virtual dollar card?

Grey is the closest like-for-like card replacement. Grey charges $5 to create a virtual dollar card and $1 each time you fund it, with no monthly card fee and no per-transaction charge in its published schedule. Cleva and Raenest issue cards as well, and their card terms sit on their own card pages rather than in this comparison.

Chipper Cash's own card is priced differently, and the per-transaction charge is the part worth checking before you switch. Chipper Cash charges $5 to issue the card, $1 a month on the 28th, and a $0.90 flat fee on every successful USD card transaction, plus 1% when funds arrive onto the card from an outside source. A transaction declined for insufficient funds costs ₦250.

What it means for you: that $0.90 is flat, so it doesn't scale down with small payments. On a $60 AWS bill it works out at 1.5%. On a $7 music subscription it's closer to 13%. If most of your card spending is small and frequent, the flat fee is the number to compare, not the issuance cost.

A card and a dollar account solve different problems, which is why they sit in separate sections here. If what you need is somewhere for a client to send $2,000, the receiving comparison above is the right list.

Can Chipper Cash receive money from a Nigerian domiciliary account?

No. Chipper Cash says its USD virtual account “is specifically for receiving international USD transfers and payments” and “is not intended for receiving transfers from Nigerian USD domiciliary accounts”. It's built for money arriving from outside Nigeria.

What it means for you: Chipper Cash's USD account is for the next payment from a client or a platform abroad, not for dollars already sitting in a Nigerian bank. Daya Borders, Grey and Cleva all give you US account details for that same job, and Daya Borders takes 0% of whatever arrives.

Which Chipper Cash alternative should you pick?

Match the app to what the money is doing, rather than to the headline percentage.

  • Paid through Upwork: Cleva. Upwork deposits are free and everything else caps at $5.
  • Paid by a client or a platform abroad, in dollars or euros: Daya Borders. 0% on what arrives, no cap, and a real euro account if some clients pay in euros.
  • Paid in pounds as well as dollars: Grey. It receives GBP at 0.8%, capped at £10.
  • Spending on a card rather than receiving: Grey, at $5 to create and $1 to fund.
  • Sending money to family elsewhere in Africa: Chipper Cash. That's the job it does that the others in this list don't.

If the money is arriving from a client or a platform abroad and the only thing you care about is keeping as much of it as possible, Daya Borders at 0% with no cap is the shortest answer in that list.

Every figure here came from each company's own published schedule on 30 September 2026. Fees in this market move often, so check the app's own page before you move a large payment.
