TRC20 vs ERC20 vs BEP20: which network should you use?

On 11 September 2026, TRC20 isn't the cheapest option. Busha charges 5 USDT to send USDT on Tron and 2 USDT to send it on Ethereum, Solana or BNB Chain. The blockchain fees behind those numbers work out at roughly $2.20 on Tron and roughly $0.03 on Ethereum. Check the fee before you send.

TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 aren't different coins. They're the same USDT sitting on three different blockchains, and the network you pick decides what the transfer costs, how fast it lands, and whether it arrives at all. This guide covers what each network costs today, what Nigerian platforms charge on top, and what to do if you've already sent on the wrong one. Which network is cheapest for sending USDT right now?

BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) is the cheapest at the blockchain level, then Ethereum (ERC20) at roughly $0.03, then Tron (TRC20) at roughly $2.20. Tron being the expensive one surprises people, because it spent years as the cheap default. Ethereum's fees have fallen a long way since, and Tron's haven't moved with them.

Those figures come from the networks themselves, checked on 11 September 2026:

• Ethereum's average gas price is 0.16 gwei (Etherscan gas tracker). A USDT transfer uses about 65,000 gas, which comes to roughly $0.03 at an ETH price of $2,446.76.
• Tron charges a fixed 100 sun for each unit of energy, and that price is set by a validator vote rather than by demand (Tron chain parameters). A USDT transfer uses about 65,000 energy, or 6.5 TRX, which comes to roughly $2.20 at a TRX price of $0.3382.
• BNB Smart Chain's standard gas price is 0.05 gwei (BscScan gas tracker), which puts a USDT transfer well under a cent.
• Solana charges a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature (Solana documentation), also well under a cent, plus an optional priority fee when the network is busy.

Ethereum's fee is the one that moves. At 0.16 gwei a transfer costs about 3 cents, and if the network gets busy and gas climbs to 30 gwei, the same transfer costs closer to $4.80. Tron works the other way round. Its price per unit of energy is a number Tron's validators vote on, so it doesn't spike when the network is busy and it doesn't fall when the network is quiet.

That's why the old rule of thumb stopped holding. Tron's validators voted the energy price down by about 60% in August 2025, and Tron is still the most expensive of the three today.

What do Nigerian platforms charge to send USDT?

Busha charges 5 USDT on TRC20 and 2 USDT on ERC20, BEP20 and Solana. Luno charges a fixed $3 to $12 on Tron depending on your region, with a $10 minimum send, and doesn't publish a fixed fee for Ethereum. Quidax, Roqqu and Daya Pro don't publish a fee per network at all, so on those three you only see the number on the send screen. These are the numbers that decide what a Nigerian actually pays, because the platform fee is far larger than the blockchain fee underneath it.

Busha's fees are on its sending fees page and Luno's are on its USDT network page. Busha also charges 1 USDT on Plasma, which is the cheapest option it publishes.

Two other Nigerian platforms are worth knowing about before you plan a transfer:

• Quidax publishes a range of 0.5 to 5 USDT for sending USDT and doesn't break it down by network, so you can't work out your fee before you start. It supports ERC20, TRC20, BEP20, Polygon and Solana (Quidax fees).
• Roqqu doesn't publish a USDT withdrawal fee schedule. Open the withdrawal screen in the app to see what you'll be charged.
• Binance has no naira services. Naira peer-to-peer trading was suspended in February 2024 and all naira services were discontinued the following month (Binance announcement), so advice built around Binance's naira market no longer applies in Nigeria.

Worth doing the arithmetic on your own amount. On Busha, sending 20 USDT over Tron costs 5 USDT, which is a quarter of the transfer. The same 20 USDT over Ethereum costs 2 USDT. On a 500 USDT transfer, the same 3 USDT difference is 0.6%. The fee is flat, so it hurts small transfers hardest.

What Daya Pro and Daya Borders charge on USDT

Daya has two products that sit at this point. Daya Pro is a trading app with a USDT against naira order book, market and limit orders, and a $1 minimum. It doesn't publish a per-network send fee, so check the send screen in the app before you move anything, the same as you would on Roqqu.

Daya Borders takes a different route. USDC and USDT sent to it arrive as dollars in your balance, and Daya Borders charges 0% on incoming dollars and euros, uncapped, so 1,000 USDT lands as $1,000 on top of whatever Busha or Luno charged to send it.

Neither removes the network question. Check the deposit screen in the app for the exact networks it accepts before you send, the same as you would anywhere else.

Why is TRC20 more expensive than ERC20 now?

Tron prices a transfer in energy, and the price of energy is set by a vote. Ethereum prices a transfer in gas, and the price of gas is set by whoever wants a place in the next block. When Ethereum is busy, gas is expensive. When Ethereum is quiet, gas is close to free.

Ethereum is quiet on 11 September 2026, at 0.16 gwei, and Tron's fixed price doesn't follow it down.

Tron splits the cost of a transfer in two, which is worth understanding because it explains the odd bits:

• Bandwidth pays for the size of the transaction. Every Tron account gets 600 units of it free each day.
• Energy pays for running the USDT contract. You get energy either by locking up TRX, or by burning TRX at the rate the validators set. That rate is 100 sun, and one TRX is a million sun.

Sending to an address that has never held USDT costs about twice as much on Tron, roughly 13 TRX instead of 6.5, because the transfer has to create a new balance entry in the USDT contract. So the first payment into a brand new Tron wallet is the expensive one, and every payment after it costs the normal amount.

A Tron transfer that runs out of energy partway through still burns the TRX. The failed transfer costs you money and moves nothing, which is why topping up TRX before a large send is worth the extra step.

Are TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 USDT the same money?

They're the same token from the same issuer, and each one is a claim on the same dollar. But they sit on separate blockchains with separate ledgers, so you can't send one directly to another. Moving USDT from Tron to Ethereum means going through a platform or a bridge that takes it in on one chain and pays it out on the other.

The practical version: your balance is USDT plus a network, not USDT on its own. When someone asks for your USDT address, they need both the address and the network it sits on, and giving them one without the other is how money goes missing.

What happens if you send USDT on the wrong network?

It depends which mistake you made. Sending ERC20 USDT to a BEP20 address usually survives, because both are Ethereum-style addresses starting with 0x and the same key controls both. Sending Tron USDT to an Ethereum address doesn't, because a Tron address starts with T and the two formats aren't compatible at all.

The four cases, from most recoverable to least:

1. Between two Ethereum-style networks, in a wallet you control. Usually recoverable. Add the other network in your wallet and the balance appears.
2. Between two Ethereum-style networks, to a platform's deposit address. The money is in the platform's control. Whether you get it back depends on the platform's recovery policy.
3. To a platform on a network it doesn't credit. Same position as above, and the answer is whatever that platform's policy says.
4. Between Tron and an Ethereum-style address. A correctly built wallet won't let the transaction go at all. If a platform let you pick the wrong network, the money is on a chain where nobody holds the key.

Published recovery policies vary a lot, and the wording matters:

• Binance runs a self-service recovery tool. Recovering a deposit on an unsupported Ethereum-style network costs 20 USDT and takes up to 30 days, and Binance says success isn't guaranteed (Binance recovery guide).
• Luno states plainly that if you use the wrong network, the funds "will be lost, and there's usually no way to recover them" (Luno help centre).
• Busha and Roqqu don't publish a wrong-network recovery policy. Checked 11 September 2026.

Send a small test amount first, every time, to a new address. On BNB Chain or Solana the test costs less than a cent, and on Ethereum it costs about three. That's cheaper than a recovery fee and much cheaper than a loss.

Which network should you use to cash out to naira in Nigeria?

Use whichever network your receiving platform charges least for, and confirm it accepts that network before you send anything. For a Nigerian moving USDT into naira, the decision gets made on the withdrawal screen, not on the blockchain.

The order to do it in:

1. Open the receiving platform first and copy the deposit address for the network you plan to use.
2. Go back to the sending platform and check what it charges for that same network.
3. Send a small test amount and wait for it to land.
4. Send the rest.

How do you check which network you're on before sending?

Look at the address format and read the label on the deposit screen. An address starting with 0x is an Ethereum-style address, used by Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Base and others, and the format alone won't tell you which of them it is. A Tron address starts with T. A Solana address is a long string of letters and numbers with no 0x in front.

• The deposit screen names the network. Read it rather than assuming, because platforms change their default.
• The same wallet shows different balances on different networks. Switching the network changes what you can see, not what you hold.
• If the sending platform's network list and the receiving platform's network list don't overlap, you need a different route entirely. Don't force it.
