Daya Borders blog cover: a dollar note following a dotted path to a naira coin. How long does an international payment take to reach Nigeria?

Most dollar payments from abroad reach a Nigerian account in one to five business days, and what decides it is the account details you gave your client. A payment to US account details, which Grey, Daya Borders, Cleva and Raenest all provide, moves on US domestic rails in one to two business days.

That range hides the part that actually frustrates people, though. The wait is usually not the transfer. It's a hold period before the money is released to you, a cut-off time your client missed, or a weekend sitting in the middle. This piece goes through each of those in order, and it sits inside our wider guide to getting paid by international clients in Nigeria.

How long does a dollar payment from abroad actually take?

It depends on which of four routes your client uses, and they aren't close to each other. FedNow arrives in seconds. ACH takes one to three business days. A US domestic wire lands the same business day if it's sent before the cut-off. An international wire, the kind that travels by SWIFT to a Nigerian bank, takes one to five business days.

The route is your client's choice rather than yours, which is the main argument for telling them which one you want before they pay you. The table below is what each route does, with every time taken from either the Federal Reserve's own published schedule or the receiving provider's own help centre.

How each US payment route behaves, and what stops it. Times from the Federal Reserve and from providers' own help pages, read on 27 October 2026.
RouteHow long it takesWorks at weekends? What holds it up
FedNowSeconds to minutesYes, around the clock including public holidaysOnly works if your client's bank has joined FedNow
ACHOne to three business daysNo, settlement stops at weekends and on US federal holidaysMisses a daily window and waits for the next one. A Friday payment can take until Tuesday
US domestic wire (Fedwire)Same business day if sent before the cut-offNo, Saturdays, Sundays and Federal Reserve holidays aren't transfer daysCustomer transfers cut off at 6:45pm Eastern. After that it's the next business day
International wire (SWIFT)One to five business daysNo, and a public holiday in any country along the chain adds to itCorrespondent banks in the middle, each with its own cut-off, plus compliance checks

Two rows in that table matter more than the rest. FedNow is the only route that works at the weekend, and the international wire is the only one with other banks sitting in the middle of it.

Why does the money reach Nigeria before it reaches your account?

Because sending the money and crediting your account are two separate jobs, and the second one is slower. Swift, which runs the messaging network behind international wires, published figures in October 2024 showing that 90% of cross-border payments reach the destination bank within an hour, while only 43% reach the customer's account that fast.

For Africa specifically, Swift put the share of payments credited to a customer's account inside an hour at 87%. So on the numbers the money is very often sitting in Nigeria, at your bank, hours or days before it shows in your balance.

Swift names the reasons for that last leg: back-office systems that process in batches, the opening hours of local payment infrastructure, regulatory requirements, and local practices such as checking with the customer that a payment is expected. GTBank describes the same thing from the bank's side on its own inward-transfer page, which says customers receive value for foreign currency inflows when the funds reflect in GTBank's accounts offshore.

What it means for you: when a client tells you the payment left days ago and your bank says it can't see anything, both can be telling the truth. The money is in the chain, and the step it's stuck on is usually the last one.

What's the fastest way for a client to pay you?

Ask them to send by FedNow, if their bank supports it. FedNow settles in seconds, runs around the clock, and works at weekends and on US public holidays, which no other US route does. Grey and Cleva both describe FedNow arrivals on their own help pages as seconds to minutes, and say weekends and public holidays make no difference to it.

Two things to check before you rely on it. The first is whether your client's bank has joined FedNow, because not every US bank has. The second is whether the account you receive into accepts FedNow at all, since not every dollar account does. Both are one message away, and the answer changes your wait from days to seconds.

If FedNow is out, a US domestic wire sent before 6:45pm Eastern is the next fastest, and it costs your client a wire fee. ACH is slower and usually free to them.

What do the freelance platforms hold your money for before you can withdraw?

This is where most of the waiting actually happens, and it's over before any transfer starts. Upwork holds hourly earnings until the Wednesday ten days after the billing week closes. Fiverr holds cleared funds for 14 days. Upwork holds a fixed-price milestone for five days after your client approves it, which it calls the standard security period.

What each platform holds your money for before a withdrawal can begin, and how long the transfer takes. Figures from each platform's own help centre.
PlatformHold before you can withdrawThen how long to arrive
Upwork, hourly contractsEarnings for a Monday to Sunday week become available on the following Wednesday, ten days laterTwo to five business days to a US bank account, up to four business days to a Nigerian bank
Upwork, fixed-price contractsFive days after your client approves the milestoneSame as above, once the hold clears
Fiverr14 days after the order completes, shorter for Top Rated, Seller Plus and Fiverr Pro sellersOne to three business days in local currency, five to seven for a dollar wire
DeelNone stated beyond the date shown on the platformOne to five business days by local bank transfer, five to seven by international wire
PayoneerA new bank account is reviewed and activated within three business daysOne to three business days, with same-day arrival possible

Add the hold to the transfer and a two-day ACH payment is a two-week wait from the day you finished the work. We go through each platform's route and fees in our guides to withdrawing from Upwork in Nigeria, getting paid on Fiverr, receiving Deel payments and withdrawing from Payoneer.

One warning that applies to all of them. Adding or changing a withdrawal method restarts a clock of its own: Upwork locks a newly added method for three calendar days, and Fiverr holds for 24 hours after you add or change a payout method. Set your account up before the payment is due rather than on the day.

Where does Daya Borders fit?

Daya Borders gives you US account and routing details in your own name, so a client in the United States is making a domestic payment rather than sending an international wire, and the correspondent banks that add the days never come into it. Daya Borders takes 0% when dollars or euros land, with no cap and no conditions, against 0.8% capped at $10 at Grey and 0.8% capped at $5 at Cleva.

Daya Borders has no fees at all today, on either side of the account. It also holds a real euro bank account as well as the dollar one, so a European client pays into euro details rather than converting first, and you can hold the balance in either currency for as long as you like rather than converting the day it lands. Upwork, Deel and Payoneer are all named on daya.co/borders as platforms it receives from.

Where Daya Borders isn't the pick. There's no card yet, so if what you need is a dollar card for subscriptions, Grey, Cleva and Raenest all issue one and Daya Borders doesn't. And if your client can only send a traditional international wire, ask that question of any app account before you choose it: three of the six main ones say in their own words that they can't receive one. We went through which, and what a Nigerian bank account does differently, in domiciliary account vs fintech USD account.

On cost rather than speed, the six-provider version of the fee comparison, including the caps and where each provider becomes the expensive one, is in best USD account apps in Nigeria.

What time of day should your client send?

Before 6:45pm Eastern for a wire, and before about 4:45pm Eastern for ACH. The Federal Reserve's wire service cuts off customer transfers at 6:45pm Eastern and closes at 7:00pm. Its ACH service runs same-day windows with deadlines at 10:30am, 2:45pm and 4:45pm Eastern, and anything handed in after the last one waits for the next business day.

Those times are Eastern Time, which is five hours behind Nigeria until 1 November and six hours behind after it, because American clocks go back and Nigeria's never move. So the 6:45pm wire cut-off is 11:45pm in Lagos this week, and 12:45am from next week.

One platform publishes a cut-off of its own, and it's the most useful single time in this article for a Nigerian freelancer: Upwork processes a Direct to Local Bank withdrawal the same day if you start it before 12:00 noon UTC, which is 1:00pm Nigerian time. Start it at 2:00pm and you've lost a day for the sake of an hour.

Which days will your payment not move at all?

Weekends, and US federal holidays. Settlement for both ACH and wires happens only when the Federal Reserve's settlement service is open, and that service is shut at weekends, on federal holidays, and overnight between 6:30pm and 7:30am Eastern on ordinary business days. A payment sent on a Friday evening can't move until Monday.

The dates left this year, from the Federal Reserve's own holiday schedule:

  • Wednesday 11 November, Veterans Day. ACH processing stops at 11:30pm Eastern on 10 November and resumes at 5:30pm Eastern on 11 November.
  • Thursday 26 November, Thanksgiving. Processing stops at 11:30pm Eastern on 25 November and resumes at 5:30pm Eastern on 26 November.
  • Friday 25 December, Christmas Day. This is the one to plan around: ACH processing stops at 11:30pm Eastern on Thursday 24 December and doesn't resume until 5:30pm Eastern on Sunday 27 December.

Then Friday 1 January, Monday 18 January and Monday 15 February 2027. On an international wire, a public holiday in any country along the chain can add to the wait, which both Upwork and Deel warn about on their own pages. If you're invoicing in December, the Christmas gap above is worth putting in your own calendar.

How long does the naira leg take once the dollars are yours?

Minutes, usually, and often less. Nigeria's instant transfer system, NIP, is run by NIBSS and credits a beneficiary before the banks settle with each other. NIBSS describes it as giving instant value to beneficiaries, with funds available in the beneficiary account before settlement, across twelve settlement sessions a day.

That mechanism is why the naira half of your payment feels nothing like the dollar half. The dollar leg waits for settlement. The naira leg credits you first and settles afterwards.

Not every naira transfer uses NIP, though. Zenith lists NIP as instantaneous and the older NEFT route as 24 hours on the same page. Among the app accounts, Grey states that naira transactions are completed instantly and tells you to contact support if an inbound naira transfer hasn't arrived after 30 minutes, and Eversend gives a measured median of one to three minutes for African bank payouts over the previous 90 days.

When should you start worrying, and what should you do?

Use the provider's own escalation threshold rather than your own patience, because most of them publish one and it's the point at which they'll open a trace for you. Below the threshold there's nothing to find. Above it, something has genuinely gone wrong.

  1. Upwork, to a US bank account: five business days, then contact Upwork.
  2. Upwork, to a Nigerian bank account: eight business days before a trace.
  3. Upwork, by wire: eight full business days.
  4. Grey, on ACH: two to three business days, depending which part of its help centre you read, which is a reason to ask early rather than late.
  5. Grey, on an inbound naira transfer: 30 minutes, with your session ID to hand.
  6. Deel: three to four business days on a rejected payment, escalating after five.

Before you escalate, check the three things that account for most genuinely missing payments: that the name on your receiving account matches the name on the paying account, that the payment wasn't sent on a route your account can't accept, and that you've cleared the verification step needed to withdraw rather than just the one needed to receive. On most dollar accounts those are two separate checks, and a payment can land perfectly well in an account you can't yet take money out of.

And get the reference. On a naira transfer that's the session ID; on a wire it's the sender's reference from their bank. Nobody can trace a payment without one, and asking your client for it on day two is a great deal easier than on day nine.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an international payment take to reach Nigeria?

One to five business days for an international wire, and one to three business days for a payment sent by ACH to US account details at Grey, Daya Borders, Cleva or Raenest. FedNow arrives in seconds where the sending bank supports it. The route your client picks matters more than the provider you use.

Why hasn't my dollar payment arrived yet?

Usually a hold period rather than the transfer. Upwork holds hourly earnings until the Wednesday ten days after the week closes, Fiverr holds funds for 14 days, and a weekend or a US federal holiday stops settlement completely. Check the hold before you chase the bank.

Can a dollar payment arrive in Nigeria at the weekend?

Only on FedNow. Grey and Cleva both state that FedNow arrivals aren't affected by weekends or public holidays. ACH and wires both settle through the Federal Reserve, which is shut at weekends and on federal holidays, so a Friday evening payment can't move until Monday.

Does Daya Borders charge anything when a dollar payment lands?

No. Daya Borders takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros, with no cap and no conditions, and has no fees at all today on either side of the account. Grey charges 0.8% capped at $10 and Cleva 0.8% capped at $5 on the same incoming payment.

How long does Upwork take to pay into a Nigerian bank account?

Up to four business days after the withdrawal, on Upwork's own fees page, though its troubleshooting page says six and asks you to wait eight before requesting a trace. Start the withdrawal before 12:00 noon UTC, which is 1:00pm Nigerian time, and Upwork processes it the same day.

How long does the naira take to reach my bank once I convert?

Minutes. NIP, Nigeria's instant transfer system, credits the beneficiary before the banks settle with each other, which is why it's near-instant. Zenith lists NIP as instantaneous against 24 hours for the older NEFT route, so it's worth knowing which one your provider uses.

When should I ask for a payment to be traced?

At the provider's own threshold. Upwork opens a trace after five business days on a US bank transfer and eight on a Nigerian bank transfer or a wire. Grey asks for 30 minutes on an inbound naira transfer. Have the sender's reference or the session ID ready before you ask.
